Not the year, the book. We really are there today. One of the big hallmarks of that book was the use of “doublespeak.” This is when words that are used, mainly by those in power, have whatever meaning the user wants, instead of having any actual meaning — and usually means the opposite of what the word really means. For example, “War is Peace.” That makes no sense in a logical, realistic world, but it does in the world of the book 1984 (and you can read it online if you like).
But look at today’s world, as perceived by the media and elites:
Tax rebates are now cash transfers from people who earn money to those who do not work. It’s not really a rebate, because most of those who will benefit never paid any taxes to begin with. Instead, they’re just getting a gift of cash — that was taken by force from someone else who worked and earned it.
The government is taking over banks. It’s clearly and obviously nationalizing the banks, one of the steps towards total socialism. But, you can’t call it that. Sure, it IS socialism, it IS the opposite of freedom, but you’re not allowed to say that. And according to Steve Lohr, there’s nothing wrong with it, and it presents no danger to freedom. Because, in 1984, freedom is slavery.
And while the markets continue to do fine WITHOUT government intervention, the fools that are Congressmen now claim that the $700 billion bailout THEY VOTED FOR was a bad idea. They’re already blaming it’s passage on other people — as if they weren’t the fools that JUST passed it. Again, a hallmark of the book 1984 is the government’s ability to change the past, simply by demanding it to be so.
I sure hope The Free State Project is successful. Because there’s no chance of freedom left for the once united States of America.
