Mooresville Recycling

How about I show you how government specifically is interested in control and power instead of freedom and people? Here it is, on a tiny town level. Mooresville, NC has around 10,700 households. It’s not a big place. Their government is considering forcing people adding recycling. Yes, I’m well aware this is how you force people to recycle because you make it voluntary at first, then mandatory later on to “save costs.” It’s crappy, horrible, controlling, anti-freedom government at it’s worst.

But the government put together a presentation that shows they honestly do not care one bit about how much money they spend. Sure, if you take the presentation at face value, it looks like this effort would actually bring income to the city. But if you look a little closer, you see that’s not actually the case.

In one place, the presentation bases all its numbers, including those that show a “profit,” on a 70% household participation. However, on the previous page, they show the nationwide average figures of participation is 40-80%, and their own goal is only 50%! So the city is going to try and get 50% participation, but bases ALL the calculations and figures on 70%! I don’t know if you can call that outright lying, but it sure is dishonest in every sense of the word. They also don’t mention in the presentation the line that helps them “earn” money listed as “tax income.”

Worse, they go on to claim that it would cost more if they let a private company do the collections for them — and then provide the data to show that’s completely untrue! The presentation claims that a private company will pick up recycling for just $3.75 per house per month. That’s all. So what would happen in a freedom-based country? The claimed 72% of town residents that want recycling could just pay $3.75 a month and get it. That’s it. There would be no government employees to pay. There would be no administrators to pay. There would be no mismanagement by the government. And best of all — the 28% of residents who do not want to be forced to pay to make other people feel good WOULDN’T HAVE TO PAY!

In other words, the options are clear. Government can use force to require people to pay them, and government will spend nearly $70 a year per household; or people could be free to contract with other free people to get curbside recycling for less than $4 a month (around $48 a year). I bet you can guess what the board “suggested” that the town do, can’t you? Government today, even in small towns, is about using force to control people and nothing more.

InBev Downsizing

Sad, but I’m sure, true.

I will miss most the wonderful Busch Gardens theme parks. I am quite sure they will be a casualty of InBev — and they were, by far, the best entertainment parks in the world. And yes, a LOT better than anything Disney has ever made.

Political Survey

Hey, want to take a survey? I can’t tell you what it’s about, because that might tend to sway the results. I guess I can say it’s an actual survey and not a Harvey modeled Zombie-jumping-out-of-the-screen survey. So, well, if you want to help out some researcher-type folks, take the survey. It will take a few minutes, and you won’t get a neat “rating” or score, but help out these researchers if you haven’t seen this survey before, would ya?

R.I.P. Gary Gygax

Gary GygaxWow. I had no idea. Gary Gygax passed Tuesday. I’m quite saddened. For those who never heard the name, his passing might mean quite little. However, everyone who has heard his name immediately recognizes it. Mr. Gygax created and shaped thousands, if not millions of lives and literally changed a good portion of the world today.

Gary Gygax, with his friend Dave Arneson, helped thousands of kids learn. He helped them learn social skills. He brought a lot of those who would otherwise still be sheltered out into the open. He helped teach creativity to an entire generation and more. His work helped drive an entertainment industry and opened doors for development and advancements in computer hardware and software. And all he wanted to do was play a game.

You see, Gary Gygax was the co-creator of the game Dungeons and Dragons.

Pittenger Files for Lt. Governor

A message from Robert Pittenger…

I wanted you to be the first to know I filed for Lieutenant Governor today [that was Tuesday -ed] at the State Board of Elections in Raleigh. Our campaign is going great. I have been traveling all over the state meeting with voters and listening to their concerns. Everywhere I go people are agreeing with my message: State government as run by the liberal Democrats has become too big - spends too much - and takes too much from taxpayers for the services they get.

I am running for Lt. Governor because I think we can do better in North Carolina. We can reform the way state government is run and restore confidence that our tax dollars are being spent for services efficiently. We can reduce the skyrocketing cost of healthcare and take the politics out of building better roads. And we can help put a stop to the flood of illegal aliens the Democrats have allowed to come in and freeload on state services.
Endorsements

If you agree with me that we need a change in leadership — I hope you will support my campaign today. Jim Martin, Jim Gardner, Patrick Ballantine, Lauch Faircloth, Mrs. Dorothy Helms, N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, Republican Senate Leader Phil Berger and Republican House Leader Skip Stam are already publicly supporting my campaign. Join the team!

Grassroots

As I am visiting with people across the state, we’re getting key people signing on in leadership positions and offering to put up yard signs, display a bumper sticker and volunteer on my behalf. If you can help in that way, please let us know. One of the most valuable things you can help me with is to allow me to list your name on my statewide list of supporters. If you will allow me to publicly list your name in support of my campaign, please click here.

Fundraising

Our campaign goal is to spend over $4 million. And the good news is we already have over a million dollars in the bank!

To reach our goal I need your help to raise money to build the war chest I need to defeat the Democrats in November. I am counting on each person I am writing to send $25, $50, $100, or more to help build my campaign. If you would take a moment and send a contribution of $25 or more I would greatly appreciate it. Anyone can go online to contribute on our website: robertpittenger.com.

Your contribution will help me overcome the Democrat registration advantage and get my message directly to voters with costly TV and radio ads.

Thank you!

I am committed to winning this campaign. But I can’t do it alone. I need you on my team. The four Democrat candidates for Lieutenant Governor are trying out-liberal each other on issues like homosexual marriage, the death penalty and the environment. We don’t need more of the same Democrat leadership that has led us down the slippery slope of scandal, high taxes and out of control government.

Please join with us in fighting for the principles that made this state and country great - hard work, limited government, a dedication to family and to God, and an independence that is the hallmark of the North Carolina spirit. I hope you will please visit my website and support my campaign. Thank you.

On A Flagpole

I found myself driving past this site a few days in a row. I really didn’t pay much attention, as I was more worried about where I was going and watching out for other cars. However, I eventually got curious about what that was. Take a peek:

North Carolina School Flag

Can you tell? Yes, it’s a flag on a flag pole. And yes, the flag IS drawn all the way to the top of the pole (despite the bottom being way down the pole). Can you tell what flag it is? I figured it out eventually. It’s a North Carolina State Flag.

Obviously, it’s in horrible shape. It’s incredibly faded, almost beyond recognition, and it’s torn nearly in two. My first thought was that I needed to buy these people a new flag so they can fly a nice flag and not be embarrassed by the sight of this flag. So I walked around the side of the building to check it out. Know what it was?

It was a government school. Yes, the very same school system that needs billions of dollars every year to pay six-figure salaries to the principals and administrators. The same Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system that always wants to raise taxes “for the children.” The same school system that is getting millions of dollars from the state-run lottery. And they cannot afford to replace a horrible, torn, faded state flag flying outside — or at least have the decency to take it down.

I’m embarrassed for them. Your government has it’s priorities straight. Paying government workers obscene amounts of money for doing nothing is clearly #1.

You Forgot Ron Paul

This is a funny song — with a catchy tune! Yes, it’s the same guy that introduced the candidates at the YouTube debate. The author on the YouTube page adds: “You Ron Paul fans asked for more lines about Ron Paul, so here it is. Be careful what you ask for next time.”

Who Owns Water?

North Carolina is experiencing a drought, like much of the southeast. What this means is that people are simply using more water than normal and less rain has fallen than the average. And this has caused government to absolutely panic, ranging from pleas to throwing aside all laws and fining people without evidence, proof, or due process. But now government wants to go even further, including regulating the water on your land. And this isn’t just water flowing across your land, like people living on a river, but water that flows under your land that you might tap with a well.

Apparently a number of people, in order to keep their lawns green, have decided to drill wells to take some water from the ground and put it, well, back on the ground. And the government doesn’t like this, mainly because it takes some control and power out of the government’s hands. Therefore, the government in Pinehurst and Union County are seeking to stop people from drilling wells on their own land and taking water from the ground and putting it in the ground — because it’s for the children. I mean, for public safety.

Now I’m not geologist, but I’m not really sure how it’s bad to take water from the ground and put it back into the ground. Sure, it might reduce the overall water table a tiny bit, but I can’t see it having a huge overall effect. But even so, who owns the water on and under your own land? Can the government claim the rights to all water under land that you own? If they can, what’s the difference from claiming any element, mineral, or natural resource that sits on land you “own?” I’d love to hear opinion from anyone on either side of this issue support or oppose government regulation of water underneath privately owned land.
