Bush and the Olympics

So Bush met with some people who like freedom. These people also are working hard to ensure that the oppressive regime of China allows people freedom of religion. No, not freedom “from” religion or state-mandated religion like the ACLU and others in America want — but actual freedom to worship on their own. I know, it’s a radical concept. But maybe president Bush really will push for freedom in China when he visits.

Now I still don’t think he should attend the opening ceremonies. Claim it’s about sports all you like, but this IS a political move, whether anyone else wants to admit it or not.

What isn’t in the press release is that at the meeting, Bush received an Olympic prayer band. He also received the addresses of a few house churches that are in China, and he was invited to visit these churches when he is there. Now if Bush really wants to send a clear message to China that we actually like freedom, he could wear that bracelet when he meets Chinese government officials. Wouldn’t that be a powerful message?
