Value of Life?

So, does life have any value at all today? That’s a completely serious question. And I’m not talking about just individuals, but instead, as an overall value in American society and culture today, does life have ANY value?

Maybe not in Australia, where mom put her kid in a fish bowl. And the mom in that case claims she did nothing wrong. Elsewhere in Australia, children are put out to die in the outdoors. And again, the “parents” claim they did nothing wrong.

But back in America, how about a woman who runs over her husband and leaves him to die. I guess she was mad at him, so therefore he dies. And of course there’s the gang members who shoot innocent people and claim they didn’t do anything. And hey, let’s not forget acid attacks.

I have to believe that these are all extremely rare instances. I have to believe that this is nothing more than the media trying to scare up business and drum up readers. Because if it’s not, then truly as a society, life really has ceased to have any value at all.

  1. There are still decent folks.

Look at the military– huge numbers re-signing to go fight for freedom with folks who we don’t even know.

Think of the *good* people who risk their lives– volunteer fire fighters, or the older fellow who took a shotgun blast in that church shooting to protect the rest of the folks.

We don’t hear about them on the news—but we’ll hear about that shooting for ages.

  2. Indeed, there are a lot of good people. As I mentioned at the end — I’ve got to believe there’s a LOT more of these good people than the ones we read about in the news. But still — there’s SO many in the news, is that just acceptable now?
