Repeal Freedom in NC!

So, the News-Observer says that there’s just too much freedom going on in North Carolina, and we need to stop some of it. They strongly support repealing the law that makes it illegal for public employees to join labor unions.

Now keep in mind, labor unions are beyond their use. They have little or no value today. They have few purposes. They primarily exist to enrich union leaders. As a secondary purpose, they exist to ensure less competition in the workplace. They use freedom crushing tactics to take money from members who disagree with them. They make it more difficult for people to work in their industry. They exist to protect higher wages and higher costs for whatever industry in which they reside.

Government employment is optional. NO ONE is forced into government employment. If you don’t like your job, just quit (unless you’re a union employee, in which case you might not be allowed to). There is no logical reason to support teachers and policemen joining unions. If they think they’re not being treated fairly, go find another job. I know that’s what I do. But of course, those who support this act will support it with outrageous lies without any basis in truth (like the idea that if it weren’t for unions, no one would ever get a weekend day off work — no really, they’re actually claiming that).

  1. Allowing NC public employees to join a union and collectively bargain is taking away freedom? From whom? To get a union, the workers have to vote for the union. And they can quit their jobs even if they are under a union contract if they don’t like their work or their union.

Every state but Virginia and NC allow unionization and collective bargaining for state employees. Are all those states not free?

  2. It is taking away the freedom to work. Unions exist to destroy. No, the workers do NOT have the freedom to quit their jobs. If they leave the union, they have to change their career. If they don’t agree with the union, they have no choice but to PAY for the union. Sorry, but unions are the complete opposite of freedom.

  3. Thanks, Ogre. Just FYI, you’ve jut gotten another taste of a Cary-ite control freak, the town that paints itself beige, and can’t figure out why some of us feel like we’ve fallen into “Stepford”. Too busy out bangin’ pots for Obama to have a clue…..

  4. I really just wish I could convince people to leave me alone and stop taking my money and telling me how to live my life.

  5. I worked in a hospital as a Nursing Assistant. For years there was no union. I was taught that nursing on a hospital floor was a team effort. I gave it my all and was appreciated and rewarded with reviews and decent raises.
Then the kitchen and housekeeping and some of the aides and orderlies became convinced that bringing AFSCME in to represent us all was the thing to do.

Suddenly, many of my co-workers chins jutted out and and the team spirit went out the window. Their right to walk out the door, coat in hand on the dot, became more important than whether a patient needed a few more minutes of attention.

Also gone were any more decent raises based on merit. They were replaced with measly raises that came on a schedule no matter how badly you did your job. They weren’t even enough to make up for the dues that they extracted from everyone’s paycheck every month.
Now I know that there was a time when Unions did a lot of good for workers, but I didn’t see any good in my experience. It took away a big part of feeling good about what I was doing and my effort to do a good job. I left that job shortly thereafter.

  6. Thanks for stopping by, Catherine. Indeed, unions destroy. That’s what they do. They get cash for the people who run them, and they get cash for people who don’t work. Everyone else suffers tremendously.
