Alaska Air: Gay Discount Airline
So hey, did you know that if you claim that you’re gay that Alaska Airlines will give you a discount? Or you can look at this in the opposite direction and note that if you’re not gay, you have to pay more to fly on this airline. Is that okay with you? I mean, could you do it for other things?
Think I could sell things at my store and ask people at the register, “Hey, if you say you’re queer, I’ll give you 10% off.” Maybe I could say, “Hey, if you say you hate women, I’ll give you a 7% discount on all your purchases today.” What if I said, “You there, tell me Mohammed is gay and I’ll give you 10% off right now.” Is there anything wrong with any of that?
Now personally, I don’t think any of those actions are illegal. In other words, government should not care, nor be involved in any of those transactions at all. But want to bet they would? How long do you think I’d last as a store if I were doing that in a big city? I bet government officials would be in to visit me in no time. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone tried to charge me with a hate crime or sue me.
But apparently when Alaska Airlines decides to base their prices on perceived actions of people who like to have sex with members of their own sex, that’s perfectly okay — but only because they’re giving a discount to gays. Imagine what would happen if they were charging gays more. Just be aware of this policy if you happen to be flying Alaska Airlines and are bringing your children with you.

Ogre, it was no different in the 60s and 70s when the “government numbers” thing was going on. Many young, anglo-saxion males coming back from Viet Nam had a hard time finding work in the industrial sector. Why, because the government decided it was time to “play catch up” and help the black community catch up. There was a time when a white anglo-saxon male with qualifications out the wazoo couldn’t get a job because businesses wanting the “tax break” had to increase the numbers of blacks hired and they used the “double value” of black females, many times with no qualifications to do the job they were being hired to do. I personally feel that yes, there was a lot of injustice over the years that put blacks on the lower rung of the employment/financial ladder, but I think making opportunities available to train and educate would have been a more solid way to go, an less frustrating for all involved, but because we are talking about the Government and liberal mindset about how “injustices are dealt with”, of course there isn’t going to be common sense involved.
Now you have a company cutting discounts for a group of people “who choose to be what they are” (IMHO). I am not for mistreating gay people, but I think if you went to say… San Francisco and offered a “heterosexual discount” on anything, you’d be locked up in jail and sued before you could say “enjoy your product”!!! I think what is good for one is good for the other. Alaska Airlines needs to be taken to court!
Now I disagree — I think the company should be free to give discounts to gays — AND I think any company should also be free to give discounts to non-gays, if they want. But as you know, if that were to happen, there’d be outrage and screaming about “hate crimes.”
