Max Borders on North Carolina Insurance
I happened across this article in the Fayetteville Observer written by Max Borders. Hey, is that a real name? For some reason that reminds me of Homer Simpson the time he became “Max Powers.” Anyway, Mr. Borders really gets it. He writes about the high cost of insurance in North Carolina — and has a very quick, simple, easy way to reduce costs of insurance in North Carolina. And it will cost zero taxpayer dollars.
How? As Mr. Borders mentions — buy just giving the people permission (yes, I know, sounds crazy) to buy insurance from elsewhere. And yes, right now, North Carolina citizens are barred by law from purchasing insurance from anyone other than Democrat government-approved insurance agents. Why? “For your own good.” You see, you’re too dumb to be able to buy health insurance on your own, so the Democrats in the North Carolina legislature will tell you what you can buy. Why does that make it expensive? Two reasons:
1. Competition. Since only government-approved insurance companies can do business in North Carolina, the government can ensure there are only a limited number of choices for you, the consumer. This is what Democrats do today (they’re actually really communists, completely controlling the means of production in this industry). And the insurance companies love them for it because the insurance companies don’t have to compete! The insurance companies bribe make campaign donations to Democrat legislators, who ensure no other companies can enter the North Carolina market. Nice and cozy.
2. Mandates. As Mr. Borders points out, the state of North Carolina says that if you want to buy health insurance for one thing, you must buy it for 46 things. Seriously. In order to sell insurance in this state, you have to sell the whole package of 46 things, even if the buyer doesn’t want them! For example, I want what’s called “catastrophic coverage.” This is insurance that only covers serious injuries and things like long-term hospital stays. It doesn’t cover doctor visits, or anything else. But I am prohibited by law from buying this type of insurance. Instead, the state forces me to purchase things like “alcohol outpatient rehabilitation coverage” — even though I do NOT want it.
That’s wrong, plain and simple. But the Democrats that have run this state for over 100 years don’t care about freedom, they care about power, control, and money. As long as the insurance companies keep paying the Democrats, they’ll artificially keep the price of insurance high. Remember that next time your company tells you that the costs of insurance have gone up. It’s not the insurance companies alone doing it — they can only do it with the help of Democrats and others who hate freedom in government.

Ogre, getting rid of the mandates and allowing competition is only part of the solution. The other part is where it gets messy. We would need to stop treating people who didn’t have insurance or could afford the care. That is the hard part. Allowing people to die from their choices in life would be political suicide.
It is like people in the flood plains not buying flood insurance. Why should they, because the government will bail them out when a flood happens. If people get treated and cared for without being able to cover it then there is no incentive to pay for the premiums.
That is where I end up wishy-washy. I know things would be better if people had to live or die with their choices but I also have a big heart and wouldn’t be able to stand around and let people die.
Maybe, the solution would be going back to charity hospitals. I could donate my money and the hospitals would probably screen who got the benefits of the charity better then now. Only letting those who truelly need it get it.
You have it right there at the end. Government is absolutely, by definition, completely incapable of charity — they have no money except what they steal from others! People would do BETTER if individuals contributed to charities and the PRIVATE charities would help people — MANY more people because they wouldn’t have to deal with the bureaucracy (and lining of politicians’ pockets)!!!
Grandma used to tell me that when she was young, People and churches supported charitable organizations to help those in need. Orphans, abandoned children were taken in by other families in a neighborhood or church, or went to orphanages sponsered by churches. Poor and unable to get a meal or a place to sleep? There were homes supported by churches and private citizens to help out till a person could get on their feet. The government didn’t take care of the people, people did! And for the most part, families took care of their own. People were closer and more responsible back then too. You know why…. Because they didn’t expect the government to step in and take care of people they should be responsible for. It tends to keep your priorities and dignity in check. If the chips are down, I don’t want the government taking care of me or my loved ones. I want things like they were for my grandma.
The thing is, it helps both the giver and the receiver when someone donates something. But when the government does it, the government isn’t giving anything they have, so it doesn’t help EITHER one. It’s morally wrong for government to “help” people.
Government help weakens the resolve of the people they are supposidly helping, and the government angers the working folks by taxing (stealing from them) to hand out the help that doesn’t help! Kinda crazy if you ask me.
Backwards — which is what government is for the most part. Government, by it’s very nature, opposes freedom and all that is good.
Not a whole lot different from Monarchys, eh? You have no freedom either way.
Indeed.
You know, if I were in NC, I bet I would be mandated to get coverage for pregnancy even though it would be a bigger miracle than God could pull off if I were to get that way!!!
Sounds like they are making life there unbearable by trying to help make money for insurance agents! And people still vote for them. THAT is AMAZING!
You are correct, you would absolutely be required to BUY insurance to cover pregnancy.
Can anyone help me find out who mandates Nurse to patient ratio in NC? What is up with Tenet Health in WNC?
I’m not sure that’s by law in NC now. I know most nurses’ organizations oppose such laws. I THINK that in North Carolina, it’s the hospital or other such organization that makes those rules (but I’m not sure).
