Thom Goolsby Withdraws from NC House Race

WILMINGTON – Thom Goolsby, a well-known Wilmington attorney, withdrew from the race for the 18th District seat in North Carolina House of Representatives today. Goolsby, a Republican, stated that he was “satisfied that integrity has been restored to the representation of New Hanover and Pender Counties”.
Goolsby’s announcement comes in the wake of the defeat of an imprisoned Thomas Wright in the May 6th Democratic primary for the 18th House District. Representative Sandra Spaulding Hughes was victorious with 75% of the vote, followed by Hollis Briggs’ 15% and Wright’s 10%.
“My entry into this race was never about me,” Goolsby said. “I was the only Republican willing to file for this office. As a result, had Thomas Wright won the Democratic primary, he would have still faced me in the general election. I would have been all that separated the people of our district from being represented by him. Now that he has been expelled from the Legislature, tried and convicted of multiple felonies, imprisoned and defeated in the Democratic primary, my service is no longer necessary,” Goolsby stated.
Goolsby signaled that he would likely run for elective office at some point in the future. He remarked that he will keep a close watch on the redistricting process’s impact on heavily Democratic House District 18, which has recently been the subject of a landmark case involving gerrymandering and the Voting Rights Act.
After contacting Representative Hughes and Mr. Briggs to convey his intentions and to thank them for having the courage to oppose Thomas Wright, Goolsby formally withdrew his candidacy at the New Hanover County Board of Elections.

I’d say Mr. Goolsby comes under the Great American category. He just did a bigger public service than most career politicians do in a lifetime.
