The president of the International Olympic Committee (the one who dislikes protests but has no problem with murdering innocents) is making his stand clear: Athletes have complete and total freedom of speech — as long as you don’t say anything he personally disagrees with. More and more I have to say that the US should now completely boycott these games. They are designed to highlight the oppressive communist Chinese regime and Bush is openly supporting them. That’s really sad.
Freedom of expression is absolutely a human right but there are small limitations. We are a movement of 205 nations, many of whom are in conflict, and the Games are not the place to take political or religious stances
So you have a right, but you have to check with him before you dare to exercise that right. Because wearing a “Free Tibet” Tee shirt might be okay under some guidelines. In fact, it appears you can SAY “Free Tibet” as an answer to a question, but if you say “Free Tibet” without being asked a question, then you’ll be kicked out. I think. Because:
If athletes genuinely want to express their opinion, that’s fine.
Unless, of course, they say something “wrong.” My guess is that the athletes, for the most part, won’t say anything because they “might” get in trouble. What a total farce. What a joke. No, it’s NOT about the sport. It may have been once, but it’s not today. It’s completely and totally political. And again, the US, and the world, is showing it’s support for the Chinese Communists. Any bets on how long after the games that China waits before they militarily attack Taiwan? My guess is less than 30 days.
