Target: Theft, Underage Drinking: Good!

If you need something, head on over to Target and get it. No, don’t pay for it, just help yourself. Target’s policy is now very clear: you may take anything you want because you’re their “guest” when you’re there, and they not only have no problem with you stealing, they will FIRE any of their employees who confronts you — even if you’re a 16-year old girl stealing hard liquor.

And Target is actually defending their actions. Target says that they would prefer this 16-year old girl go home and get drunk on her stolen liquor; rather than her be stopped. Even in today’s world, where the outrageous has become commonplace, this is utterly insane. Attention all 16-year olds: go to Target and steal alcohol because they will not stop you.

It used to be that there was right and wrong in the world. One of the true hallmarks of Western Civilization was it’s strict morals and common ground. And while it’s true that the words “Orwellian newspeak” get overused today, we have reached the point where nothing is truly wrong and words can have any meaning you want them to as you use them.

Can you even imagine the mindset of the Target management that can possibly say, “Gee, you should have let that 16-year old girl get drunk.” What sort of twisted mind has to exist in order to see nothing wrong will allowing a young girl to steal and drink without making any attempt to stop them? Then, to FIRE an employee for stopping the girl is beyond comprehension.

This is quite similar to the recent incident where the government employee got fired for reporting a crime in progress. If your company’s policy is in opposition to common decency, and even common laws that have been around for centuries, you are now required to obey the policy and not the law. How insane has this world become? Admittedly, it’s not all bad, but Target actually believes it’s more important to follow company policy than to stop 16-year old girls from stealing and drinking. Wow.

Is there anything that is actually wrong today? Anything at all?

  1. would it be wrong if an employee got stabbed while trying to stop petty theft?

  2. I believe (unless they’ve been recently repealed) there are laws in many states that call for a new class and more severe punishment for additional crimes of violence that are committed while one is in the act of committing a different crime.

  3. Right thats great but what about the high school kid who just got stabbed in the face because he was trying to save a multi billion dollar company a few bucks. Why not just be safe about the whole thing and just make sure nobody gets hurt. It seems ifinitley more irresponsible to me to encourage potentially violent confrontations than it does to just get it on video and call the cops.

  4. To be honest, in this situation the security guard was 100% right and the policy should be more flexible. I can see the pont of the policy though

  5. Policy is stupid. No policy should ever be so set in stone as to allow this type of stuff to happen. Right and wrong, good and bad- should prevail.

This man did the right thing and he did so with some compassion (like he said, he could have called the police). Good God- to be fired for doing the right thing, at the right time..for being a concerned fellow citizen; for being honorable about it to boot. Where have we gone, this country?

I hate Target and now even more.

  6. The policy is completely wrong. The policy says that if you talk to the wrong person, you’re fired. I’m not suggesting that the policy FORCE anyone to do anything. I’m suggesting it doesn’t PUNISH people for obeying the law! That’s completely and totally wrong.

As for calling the police, sure, you just go ahead and give that a shot. Hope you don’t actually need them.

  7. This makes me sick. It does. Just like the guy who shot the robber when he was delivering the pizza…

  8. Indeed. It makes no logical sense at all. It’s rules that are set up to punish the responsible. You are STRONGLY encouraged to — by law and by “company policy” to be utterly and completely irresponsible at all times.

  9. Not to defend Target, but they could be facing a huge lawsuit because this guy didn’t follow the guidelines for stopping a shoplifter.

You are not allowed to stop a shoplifter until they leave the store, sounds like she was still in the store. Because they may have a change of heart and not steal the stuff.

Now they could face a lawsuit for false accusation.

Target should educate everyone on stealing guidelines, so in cases like this the person would know what to do.

  10. And they should be facing a lawsuit for any kid who steals alcohol from the store and ISN’T stopped. Common sense (as happened in this case except for the punishment) should absolutely trump stupidity and moronic laws.

It’s not a legal issue about theft because they never called the police! The man just stopped her and called her dad. I wish LOTS MORE people would do that!

Target should shut up and re-hire the man.

  11. I would like to see this employee sue Target. It would be refreshing to see someone file a lawsuit based on getting a raw deal when they DO THE RIGHT THING, rather than people filing suits when they are irresponsible and they decide they need free money for being that way.

  12. Sorry, you’re not allowed to sue FOR responsibility, only when you’re irresponsible. Just ask a lawyer.
