Bicycle Cities
My good friend Kender send me information about this group that wants to create Bicycle Cities around the country. Kender sent me this link, intending for me to laugh and make fun of these people — and I did laugh at them. However, I have absolutely no problem with what they’re doing. These people want to create:
is a planned urban design community where people live, work and play. It’s eco-friendly, car free design is healthy, sustainable and animal friendly.
Now, as far as I can tell from their web site, there are no actually Bicycle Cities that have been created yet. Looking over the web site, they’re also quite unclear on exactly HOW such a thing might be done. They have “What, Why, Who, When, and Where,” but not how. For me, it’s quite simple — as long as you don’t use government force to do the “How,” I completely and totally support this concept! Seriously!
I love the idea of people who are of like mind freely gathering together to make a community that they desire. As long as they’re not violating the Constitution, I’m all for it. I think it would be a really neat place — a place without cars. No, I don’t think it will be all that effective, but who knows. I’ve often wondered what would happen with a city — like Charlotte — if they just make everyone part outside the inner loop of the interstate and only allowed pedestrian traffic and bicycles in the inner city.
So you people at Bicycle City — I honestly wish you the best. I hope you can find enough people, money, and land to purchase some land and have people voluntarily join you in your efforts. However, the minute you start taking my money via government force, I will oppose you with everything I have. Freedom works every time it’s tried. Voluntary cooperation is great. Government force is evil.
