Alan Keyes for President?

I like Alan Keyes. In fact, I still have my “Vote Alan Keyes” Tee-shirt from back in 2000. And if you think Barry Obama is a good speaker, you should hear Alan Keyes — he could run circles around Barry. However, yes, I’m away Barry beat Alan for a US Senate seat. But Alan has a problem that makes a lot of people hate him — he’s black and he’s Republican (more or less). That gets him called all sorts of things by the media, Democrats, and black “leadership.”

But now he might be running for president on the Constitution Party ticket. Sure, go ahead with your “spoiler” and “wasted vote” lines. But know what? I’m just sick and tired of not being able to vote for a good candidate. I’m tired of voting for the “lesser of two evils.” As I’ve mentioned (and many others have): No good is no good.

If I agree with Obama 1% of the time, Hillary 4% of the time, and McCain 6% of the time, what’s the point of voting for the “lesser” of the evils? I can agree with people like Ron Paul and Alan Keyes 90% of the time. Of course, here in North Carolina, you’re not allowed to vote for anyone but the Republican or Democrat (by law), so it will be rather difficult to actually vote for Mr. Keyes, but we’ll see how it goes.

I do think it’s very, very interesting times for the Republican Party. There’s people like McCain, who want to turn the Republican Party into socialism lite — a huge government that provides for everyone; then there’s people like Ron Paul, who want to take the Republican Party back to it’s roots in a small government era; then there’s people like Bob Barr and Alan Keyes who are saying that the Republican Party is gone and we need to bring back Constitutional government by some other method. It’s interesting, I just hope that some way (I don’t really care how) we actually get a Constitutional government again. However, I’m not holding my breath.

  1. WOW…Now this interests me. A lot. I’ve known of Alan for a logn time and have always liked him and…I could get behind him much more than the other choice we have (McCaint)….way cool. I’ll check this out more later when I get either a. home b. more time

  2. Alan Keyes is really great. He’s incredibly honest. And unlike almost every other politician, he believes in freedom and responsibility. He would be an absolutely awesome president.

  3. Yes- and I’ve always liked his plaform. ALWAYS.

I like personal responsibilty, and this leads to freedom in most situations. Alan is very inspirational in his talks about this. He isn’t demeaning and rude and nasty. Yet he puts the power into the hands of those who should have it- You, Me, Everyone else. Some people are scared of this- and others think people are too stupid to hold such power. (liberals)

I’m pretty excited to think about this.

  4. Unfortunately, I’m afraid people like you and I, who support freedom and responsibility are in the vast minority when it comes to the voting populace. I think way too many, including the party insiders, are more concerned with power and money — they would rather have personal power than allow people to have freedom.

  5. Yeah it’s maddening and sad at the same time. Freedom is scary now- the thought of taking responsibility for one’s own actions scares the heck out of people. They don’t consider the other side: having control over their lives and every aspect of it. And the lives of their kids…

    It’s too bad.

Freedom scares people because the party insiders tell them they’re too stupid to make their own choices. Uugh.

  6. I know many people, too, that have given up. They know there’s no hope with the current political parties, so they just arm themselves and ignore the world. They want to be left alone, and they’re willing to pay taxes if it will get them left alone.

Of course, it’s a sleeping giant — if these people are pushed enough, they’re going to get mad — I think.

  7. Of course they will. Revolution mad. It wouldn’t surprise me to see it happen in our lifetime too. A few will take out the many who seek to destroy what our country used to be about.

    Gah.

  8. Have you seen this?

  9. Yeah, I’ve seen that. I think the Libertarian Party isn’t going anywhere. They’ve been around for decades now and they’ve gotten the label of druggies — and they can’t shake it. I think if Barr runs on that ticket, he’ll just pick up votes of people who weren’t going to vote anyway. And he won’t be allowed to run in NC because the political powers here will only permit Democrats and Republicans.

  10. You “can agree with … Alan Keyes 90% of the time”??? I’ve been supporting him [listening to him, reading about him, campaigning for him, etc] since 1999 and agree with Dr. Keyes, I’d say, 99.9% of the time. In half a century, I’ve NEVER even heard about such a fine statesman as Keyes outside of our Founders. I’m curious what 10% you have issue with?

  11. Offhand, I couldn’t name the 10%. But I’m leery of saying that I agree with ANYONE 100% of the time! How about saying it this way:

I agree with Alan Keyes more than any other current or former presidential candidate I’ve ever seen! :)

  12. WORKS FOR ME!

By the way, are you aware that Dr. Keyes has a major news announcement this Apr. 15th from Hazleton, PA? It will be streamed live so check his website for more information. If C-Span and the ‘major’ news media knew what’s good for them [or at least our Nation] they’d be covering it in force too. It promises to be real good. I’m sure he will cover why he left the GOP [actually, they left him] and why all real conservatives should do likewise.

  13. What a date to pick! I’m going to be sure to check that out, that sounds exciting. I really wish someone who supports freedom could get a real chance to run this country. It would really be a CHANGED place.

  14. Urg, the comment policy made me lose my comment!!

What’s the deal with Alan Keyes? He jumped in the ring with the Republicans, went to a debate or two, and disappeared.

I really like Alan Keyes. I am still backing Ron Paul right now, but when he bows out after the convention I will be looking for a new candidate to back, and Alan Keyes is a great option.

I learned of the CP back in 2000 when Alan Keyes said that was the party he’d run under if he ever left the Republican party (which he said at the time he never would). I’ve been voting CP for President ever since.

Did you see what Ron Paul delegates in Minnesota did? In my district, we elected only RP delegates to the National convention.

  15. Sorry about the comment policy!

I’m not sure I get what Alan Keyes is doing this year. He tried to get in the debates, but he was uninvited to some later one. Here in NC, he’s still on the Republican primary ballot (we don’t vote for another month yet). However, since he can’t win that, rumor has it that he’s working on running as an independent — or if the Constitution Party nominates him (April 23-26 in Kansas City). Of course, here in NC, the Constitution Party is not legal, so he’d have to be a write-in — and even those votes aren’t counted unless you jump through a LOT of hurdles.

And in case you think I mis-typed, I didn’t. In North Carolina, if 90% of the people write in exactly the same name, those votes are not counted because while you can technically write in people on the ballot, unless those people have been “certified” by the state, the votes don’t count.

This could be odd for me — the Constitution Party could nominate Keyes as their candidate before I vote — and then on my Republican primary ballot, I’ll be able to choose Keyes or Ron Paul! That’s a choice I can live with.

I LOVE what Paul delegates did in NC. I was trying to do that here, but the rules on who can be a delegates are well-hidden. If you haven’t “paid your dues” in the party, you’re automatically not eligible — and no one will allow you to even run for delegate.

  16. Ogre,

Sounds like N. Carolinians NEED to do a lot of their own house cleaning to take back their government of, by and for THE PEOPLE! This is what Dr. Keyes has been trumpeting for years. I believe Keyes is driven by a higher calling than probably every other candidate. It is this CALLING that causes him to offer himself, his candidacy, under the most unlikely chances of success so that WE… THE PEOPLE can actually have that choice. Your sad description of the state of political affairs in your State is PRECISELY the reason Keyes runs. THANK GOD!

  17. I wish we could — but I honestly believe that today the majority of the voting populace isn’t interested in freedom. I believe the majority actually wants socialism, sad as that is. Unless more people actually wake up and join Dr. Keyes and his ideas, there is no hope for Democracy and America.

Then again, that’s why I don’t put my trust in people.

  18. “Unless more people actually wake up and join Dr. Keyes and his ideas, there is no hope for Democracy and America.”

If the Constitution Party does the right thing in a couple weeks and nominates Dr. Keyes, ‘people’ will have ONE MORE CHANCE! Conservatives are waking up to the reality that short of another 911, McCain will NOT be elected. I HOPE they also wake up to the fact that, with Keyes running, they will NEED to get excited and animated behind him, because if not, we WILL get the Dem.

A paradigm shift in politics is underway this season. That ‘great’ centrist swing vote which has been without a Party home for decades now has one — the GOP. Now, the Constitution Party is the conservative party. This stands to relegate the term ‘bipartisanship’ into the dustbin of the English Lexicon. In the coming years, ‘tripartisanship’ will be the new term. Anyone want to register it?

  19. I was reading the laws of NC today — Dr. Keyes cannot appear on the ballot as an independent or write-in because he appears now on the Republican Primary. I’m not sure if he can appear as a member of the Constitution Party, that’s not clear. I know it’s VERY difficult to get another political party on the ballots in North Carolina and they kick you off the ballot if you don’t get lots and lots of vote for governor.

And yes, the tide does feel like it’s changing so that Obama is going to beat McCain big time. And there’s certainly no question that conservatives currently have absolutely nowhere to go politically.

I believe there’s enough people that agree with Keyes’ positions — but there’s an awful darn lot of people who will vote R for 2 reasons: they’ve always voted R and don’t care; or they simply just support the party apparatchiks.

I’d LOVE to see a third party get strong nationally. Or even a fourth or fifth!

  20. Ogre, did you get the email I sent you about 2 weeks ago when I signed on with Alan Keyes committment?
Have you been to his website? I really think he is the real deal.

  21. Yes, I got that and signed the pledge, thanks for sending it along! I’ve long been a fan of Alan Keyes. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s any way he can get on the ballot here in NC in the fall (unless the Republican convention nominates him…)

  22. Ogre,

You, and many more millions, must stop THINKING ‘two dimensionally.’ You say; “conservatives currently have absolutely nowhere to go politically,” but this IS NOT TRUE! They must be informed that they DO! The Constitution Party! You and I [and everyone who loves America] can now, either be a COG in the wheel of POSITIVE change, or continue to stand by and watch ‘them’ drag her to her grave. I assume this blog is your COGnitive effort.

Regarding a lot of people voting ‘R’ let me submit a third reason: Lack of FAITH! Jesus addressed this human failing several times… “Oh you of little faith…”

  23. Good point, good point! I guess much of what I say is based on the idea that I’m in North Carolina and I’ve seen the NC political machine from the inside — and it’s NOT pretty. It is near impossible to fight the Republicans and Democrats here. They work together to ensure they stay in power eternally. Just to let you know how bad it is, North Carolina has been under one party rule for over 100 years, literally.

But you’re right. I shall tonight start working to get the Constitution Party permitted in the state — even if it takes until 2012 to get on the ballot!
