Smoking Bans
Quick note: Every single last one of you people who want to use government to ban smoking or increase taxes on cigarettes “for health program” is a sorry, miserable, selfish, mean-spirited, freedom-hating bastard. That’s just the plain truth.
You can hate smoking all you want. You can despite the smoke that comes from them. You can even believe the few reports that claim second-hand smoke is dangerous (even when there’s plenty of other reports by just as many reputable scientists that claim the opposite). But when you want to use government to force your opinions on other people, you are just plain wrong and mean. You are suggesting that the government KILL people for smoking a cigarette somewhere you don’t like.
Yes, KILL people. That is what happens when you disobey government. If you smoke where you’re not allowed to, government will attempt to stop you. If you refuse to stop, government will use force to stop you. If you resist that force, the government will continue to use more force — up to and including deadly force. So those of you who are supporting these actions of government, do NOT claim to like freedom. Do NOT claim to be supporting American ideas. Instead, admit that you are a miserable socialist and you hate free people — because you do.

In parts of California it has gotten to the point that you aren’t even allowed to smoke in an apartment or condo because they “fear” the second hand smoke may get into the ventellation system and. . . well, it’s idiotic. Just because you smell the smoke, it doesn’t mean that you inhaled a messload of toxins. Blows the mind how the liberals think.
Much of the second hand smoke argument is false. The ingredients and chemicals that make up the cigarettes are inhaled by the person actually smoking; the free smoke that flows in the air is diluted with 02 and whatever else is in the room air. VERY little to NO nicotine is ever present in 2nd hand smoke. Otherwise we’d have tons of addicts.
Smoking bans should be up to the individual businesses and not government. I don’t have issue with bans in apartments and condos when the owners make the rules- and often it’s for fire prevention and not 2nd hand smoke. Insurance rates are much lower for SMOKE FREE multiple living quarters.
Illinois instituted a smoking ban on January 1, 2008. No smoking in a building of public occupancy. Restaurants, businesses, bars, clubs, the local shooting club, all smoke free inside, within 15′ of the door, window or any air intake.
By the 20th of January there was already scuttlebutt about relaxing the regulations.
Smoking is a CHOICE. Patronizing a facility that allows smoking is a CHOICE. If the owner of an establishment or business says no smoking, I can respect that.
I have lived in apartments and I occasionally smoke a pipe or cigars. But never inside the apartment or someone’s house. I always go to the deck, or the porch. I smoke while driving in my truck. I don’t like cigarette smoke inside houses or cars, as it goes stale and stinks. Cigar and Pipe smoke doesn’t go stale the same way.
Raven and Doug, unfortunately, you’re very right — and it doesn’t matter. One thing I have learned today by watching politics very closely is that truth is utterly and completely irrelevant. Seriously. When it comes to lawmakers, politicians, and laws, honestly, truth, and facts are completely disregarded. Nothing matters any more but “feelings.” Think about it.
Petey, you obviously don’t understand the purpose of government today. The primary purpose of government today, according to government, is to “protect” you. From what, well, that doesn’t matter. Those Who Know Better (government) will decide what they need to “protect” you from — primarily based on feelings and cash donations. Sad, but incredibly true today.
I may be biased, since I do smoke (it is really my only vice. I do not do drugs, and do not drink that often, and then usually only a little), but, I look at the smoking bans as just left wing hysteria as it is an easy target.
Me, I cannot stand being around cigar and pipe smoke. But, I am not going to pitch hissy fits and ask that it be banned. Likewise, people plastered are annoying. But, should they be banned?
Now, people who drive too slow in the left lane, and those who clog up the walkways at supermarkets and malls, they should be banned!
I smoke a couple cigarettes a day…more when I go out to bars and like places (lol) (we disregard no smoking laws up here!)
I don’t like smoke. It bothers me. I have to keep windows open and fans blowing!
I don’t smoke in my home- I go outside on the patio. I don’t smoke in my vehicle because it distracts my driving. I never smoke at friends houses or in their cars unless they tell me its okay (and only if they’re smokers too!)
It’s all about choice. Perhaps, PERHAPS I could see banning smoking in public buildings and similar places. But not bars, restaurants and other places where people HAVE A CHOICE to enter.
Mississippi wants to raise tobacco taxes to pay for the additional Medicaid costs of poor people with smoking related illnesses. Why not just deny medical claims made by poor people with smoking related illnesses? There seems to be a definitive cause of smoking related illnesses otherwise, the doctors would call them something other than smoking related illnesses.
Government is stupid.
I think farts smell bad (except my own, of course). Therefore, they should be banned. Seems logical in today’s government world, doesn’t it?
Two Dog, we absolutely cannot do that. You see, that would imply that people can be held responsible for their own actions. Government in America exists to protect you from being responsible for your own actions, so that simply will not ever happen. And health care? That’s free and cannot be denied anyone for any reason. Even suggesting it means you are evil, according to government. They might ban you.
Teach, I think rather than banning slow people in the left lane, it should simply be legal to ram them at will. Of course, I’ll need to buy a big truck, but then I bet the left lane stays clear!
Ogre, I am just a machine that generates comments on blogs, I have no feelings, so I cannot be evil.
If you have no feelings, you are not allowed near the American government and cannot comment on their policies. ALL government today is ONLY about feelings.
In regards to one of your earlier comments, Ogre, it is funny how some restraunts that serve really spicy foods will ban smoking at the same time, if ye get my meaning.
I really do not have that much of a problem with banning smoking in certain public places, the same as drinking is banned.
However, at least I know when someone is smoking, as opposed to releasing silent but deadly
Oh, you’ll know… eventually…
