VA Tech Lawsuits
The VA Tech Lawsuits have been in the news again recently. Now on principle, I strongly oppose lawsuits against government. The ONLY effect they have is to raise taxes. You see, the people who are IN government don’t have to pay these lawsuits with their money — it’s someone else’s money, so they honestly don’t care when they have to pay settlements. The money means absolutely nothing to them.
However, in this case, I think the lawsuits are valid — but individuals should be sued, not the government school. Every individual that voted to approve the rule that said students are not permitted to defend themselves should be personally liable. These people voted to make a rule that said, “You can’t defend yourself, so we take FULL responsibility for your protection.” They failed in their protection. They should pay.
When you remove rights from people, you should assume responsibility for them. Personally, I simply refuse to allow someone to remove those rights so I don’t have to deal with that problem (for the most part). But there was clearly an implied contract that assumed all responsibility for the protection of students. They failed. Sue the individuals, not the government.

If I were a person who had an interest in this, I WOULD SUE the school for failing to keep me safe by means of not allowing me to carry a gun.
In fact I hope someone DOES just this- either them self or on behalf on one of the victims.
Pathetic. Gun free zones cannot protect anyone and just leave us open to harm, like sitting ducks.
If your going to sue, go for the individuals who block the right. Here in Illinois (where there was a threat of another campus shooting at Western Illinois University yesterday http://peteyspowderhorn.blogspot.com/2008/03/now-its-getting-really-close-to-home.html ), it would mean filing a suit against the governor, chicago mayor daley, all the members of the general assembly who refuse to support a concealed carry law in the state, or who block it. Their blockage of allowing law-abiding citizens to carry a protection piece leaves us vulnerable. It is sickening.
The criminals are armed, the police are armed but can’t be everywhere all the time, and people like me are forced to remain as (almost) unarmed victims (since I can’t carry a gun, I always have at least one pocket knife).
That’s it, you’ve got it! We need to sue INDIVIDUALS who are responsible for taking the right of self-protection away. When these INDIVIDUALS vote to take away a right to protect ones self, they are assuming complete and total responsibility for the personal safety of that person. That SHOULD be enforceable in a court of law. Unfortunately, the slimy lawyers will usually go after the cash, not the responsible — so they’ll go after government, who has a literal unlimited supply of cash — and not the scumbag politicians who actually took responsibility.
I’d certainly sue the individuals. Absolutely. Mane them personally; go after their assets and all. Cash wouldn’t be my goal even though it would the lawyers’ only goal…
I really wish someone would try and hold these people responsible. I’m quite sure, however, that the judge would rule some crap about the individual NOT being responsible because they were acting as a government official. I used to know what that’s called, but I can’t remember right now the legal term.
