Boycott Chinese Olympics

Now remember, I’m a HUGE fan of amateur sports. I absolutely LOVE the Olympics. I stay up late at night and get up early in the morning to watch these things when they’re in different time zones. I contribute regularly and in large amounts to help the US Olympic team. But it’s time to say enough is enough.

It’s done.

When an oppressive government is throwing thousands in re-education camps because they want freedom, we cannot support that government. Hundreds are being murdered for disagreeing with the government. And the government is openly saying they will destroy any who disagree with them. Heck, what have times come to when even FRANCE is starting to complain?

No, it’s time. Numerous times in the past centuries, repressive governments have held Olympic games to ensure the world would approve of their government and their actions. It’s time to stop. It’s time the US grew some gonads and stood up to these miserable governments. Instead, of course, the US will strongly support China and ALL it’s internal policies. Good luck, Tibet, with getting anything but words of support from the US.

To stand up and boycott the games would send a STRONG, strong message. It would show the world, once again, the power and might of the US. It would show that the US is more interested in freedom and right than in cash. But I’m not holding my breath. It would take guts to boycott and that’s not going to happen, is it? Money trumps right once again. It looks like France was right — the US isn’t the world leader in anything any more.

  1. Amen Ogre!!!

  2. Would a boycott include not using the products of advertisers and sponsors? Not watching them on TV? Writing the sponsors to tell them you won’t be using any products associated with the Olympics and why??? Help me figure this out because even on a good week, I could never even afford a trip to Bejing.

note: I am in a meeting and typing on a laptop, so I am struggling here! Some job this is.

  3. Let’s blog on this as a group with the same suggestions. I think going forward with this as a group would be the best way to make an impact.

  4. Well, I meant that the United States Olympic Team needs to be prevented from going to China. The President of the United States needs to stand up and tell China that we’re not putting up with China and it’s murdering of citizens. And the President needs to tell China and the world that we will not send our good young men and women to such a country because we think they are just plain wrong.

But again, I’m not holding my breath.

  5. I think I will fish up the addresses for the Olympic Committee and the Prez and get it up so this can be put out there. Plus, look at the advertisers who sponsor the Olympics. And contact them. Sometimes pressure applied can make impact and your point is the way all America should be viewing this. Come on Ogre… This issue is a chance to make a valid statement. Everyone is busy pointing to everything that is wrong about America and critisizing the way we deal with world issues… time to get interactive. Man I wish you would run for President!

  6. There’s a growing movement to at least boycott the opening ceremonies. Now that would be a HUGE statement — and I’d like to see not only the president and ALL US officials, but the athletes as well — they ARE allowed to do that, if they so desire.

Can you imagine the message that would be sent if China had an opening ceremony and no one showed up but the Chinese?

  7. Yeah… that would be a doable, realistic goal. We will have to revisit this soon. (today I’m stuck in an all day “Blue Cube discovery meeting”. Ick!

  8. I’ll give GW a ring later on…

  9. Wait, you’re in a cube with the Blue Man Group today? How cool is that?

  10. Probably the simplest effect you could have would be to send “Free Tibet” tee shirts to the U.S. Olympic team. Barring that, because it’d probably be too over the top, i there was a publicized website declaring some armband or random color as a solidarity statement with Tibet….I dunno.

The term “reeducation prison” pangs of old Nazi Germany.

  11. The athletes themselves are strictly prohibited from many any attempt at a political statement at the games. That’s part of the Olympic rules. That’s why to make any political statement takes the government — in this case, Bush. And he doesn’t mind the Chinese killing innocent citizens.

The only attempt at a statement that the athletes could make is to not show up at the opening ceremony. There’s no rule that requires them to show up and that’s not an “official” political statement, so they would be allowed to do that. If they wore t-shirts or colors, the Olympic committee would throw them out.

  12. Yeah, now I remember the whole “black glove” event.

the olympics, just like most of the other “good will” organizations, have become corrupt. No even the Nobel Peace Prize is valid anymore.

  13. The Nobel “Peace” prize is designed for whomever makes the US look bad each year. Or kills the most people.

The Olympics started going bad, in my opinion, when they started letting professional athletes in. It was truly wonderful before then. Now I refuse to watch any professionals who compete in any events…which these days is making it so there’s less and less to watch.

  14. The Russia/US basketball debacle was the start of their downfall.

Since then my biggest gripe has been them bending over backwards for China to the point that they refused to let Taiwan participate unless they went as “Chinese Taipai”.

  15. And they continue to claim the Olympics aren’t political.

  16. Um, if the point you are making is that china is ass backwards, where do you, as an american of someone that sounds like one, get off putting down France.

You rape every country you can find, but through a fit if the Chinese do it.

Seriously, you were mad at France cause they told you right off the WMDs were B.S., now that you have been proved wrong your an even bigger racist.

Grow a pair of balls, apologize to the french, and then we can discuss the china issue.

  17. France, France… now where have I heard that country before? Oh right — the ones who were on Saddams payroll. The country that was taking bribes to support Saddams murderous regime. Yes, the country that was skimming the UN’s food-for-oil cash. Tell me again why I should listen to France?

And the WMD canard is still going on? Geez, you’re kidding me, right?

And feel free to look up the word “racist.” It has nothing to do with opposing political ideologies, as I did in this post.

  18. Would boycotting China’s Olympics for repressing the Tibetan caste system be like the US government’s 1980 boycott of the Soviet Union’s Olympics because the Soviets fought the Taliban?

  19. Nope. Not at all.
