Bill Graham for NC Governor?
In North Carolina, we’re not mirroring the nationwide election. We’ve got (at least) four individuals who have signed up on the Republican ticket who all want to be governor. And just like the national events, each of them claims that they are “more conservative” than anyone else on the ticket.
The other day, I heard Bill Graham on WBT radio (on the Jason Lewis show). Mr. Graham was talking about his campaign. And yes, he said he’s more conservative than the other folks running.
I guess in order to search out who is the “real” conservative, one has to define “conservative.” While John McCain might define “conservative” as “nice person who is registered Republican,” I don’t. Instead, a very simple definition for me would be the following:
Conservative. One who believes government is evil.
That’s about it. Everything else just naturally follows. If government is evil, then raising taxes is bad. If government is evil, using government to take away freedoms is wrong. If government is evil, ANY government solution is a poor solution at best. So I’m going with that. No on to what I heard (and read about) Mr. Graham.
He worked to cap the gas tax. Yes, we all know that. He was pounding that on the radio (he said it at least twice in 2 minutes). Got it, that’s good. Then it was all downhill. He basically said that he didn’t think we should bribe large businesses to come to North Carolina, because that’s expensive. Instead, we should bribe small businesses to come to North Carolina because that would cost less.
How about we don’t use taxpayer money to bribe ANYONE? Wouldn’t that be a novel concept? And no, I really, really don’t care that we’d “lose” competition with other states for businesses. That would suit me just fine, thank you very much. I’d rather have no businesses in the state than pay billions in taxpayer cash to businesses.
For health care, Mr. Graham wants government to increase spending (presumable in the billions range) to get insurance to the uninsured. Typically, the program is called “WE CARE.” What is means is, “We care about spending huge piles of government cash to make you feel good and to buy your votes. We DON’T care about people who are responsible, take care of their own health, and work hard to put food on the table, those people can suck eggs — as long as they keep working so we can find cash to buy votes.”
Wow. Sorry, Mr. Graham, based on my definition of a conservative, you are no conservative. You actually believe government is good and that government can solve problems. Not only is that bad, in my opinion (even if it does win elections), it’s wrong and morally incorrect. Any other candidates want to weigh in?
