Free Rape Kits

All Rape Kits should be free. No one should ever have to pay for them. After all, once you’re a victim, you never are supposed to be responsible for, well, anything, ever again. At least that’s what Mandy Locke of the News and Observer implies. And I’m guessing anyone who opposes free stuff will be branded “uncaring.” Like me.

The issue is the cost of a “rape kit” and the associated medical care. Here’s the details reported: if a woman gets an examination for a rape, the hospital has to do the exam. They have to gather evidence and such. And this costs money. There’s the facility, the examination, the materials, the doctors, etc., etc. Since the woman went to the doctor, the doctor and the hospital HAVE to pay. The state pays some, insurance pays some, and the woman gets the rest of the bill. And that’s just “not fair” claim some.

While I understand the issue, I’ve got a GREAT idea for a solution. And yes, it will cost the government LESS money, so it will be strongly opposed by a large majority of people. Here’s my solution:

1. Any woman who reports a rape can get this examination and rape kit at no charge to them.
2. The state has 180 days to complete their investigation. If there is evidence of a rape, the state will pay for the kit, exam, etc., as it is all part of the evidence gathering procedure.
3. HOWEVER… if no evidence is found of the rape, the entire bill goes to the woman. And insurance doesn’t have to pay a dime if they don’t want to.

See? Can you see how so many will oppose my idea? Sorry, but it actually holds people responsible for their actions, so I know it will NOT be popular.

  1. You make sense Ogre. How many false accusations cost tax payers money? It would be interesting to see those stats!!!
Someone wants to cause someone incovenience and and scare… they accuse them of rape. It’s not right, either on the accused or the taxpayer.

  2. But it’s “unfair.” I’m sure if this proposal were ever advanced, we would be told some women (poor women, probably blacks, too) would be too “scared” to report because they “might” not find evidence. Oh, and what about those women who were raped, but no evidence was found? Oh, that would be horrible.

The stories would go on and on forever. Anyone want to be that the taxpayers had to foot the bill for the woman in the Duke “rape” case in which there was NO rape?

  3. Amen!
