Juno - China - Adoptions

I don’t know anything about this movie, “Juno.” Seriously, I’ve never heard of it. But I hear this line is really “offending” people:

“You shoulda gone to China. You know, ’cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those T-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events.”

My reaction? HAHAHAHAHA! That’s funny.

Sadly, it’s closer to truth than people will admit. Some say it’s “hurtful” and “offensive.” And yes, “lighten up” is the appropriate response to these people.

But there is a more serious issue. I know a number of people who have adopted children. And some have adopted from China. Know why? First, because indeed, there ARE so many unwanted children in China, it’s insane. Second, all the people I’ve talked to about adopting from other countries say it’s easier to adopt in another country than in America.

That’s a bigger problem, isn’t it? It’s easier for a married couple to adopt a child from China than it is for them to adopt a child in America. What does that say about America and the utterly screwed up government that runs that system?

  1. As an adoptee I couldn’t agree more.

  2. I know several people, who after years of waiting to adopt in the US ended up going to another country and adopted in less than a year.

Yes, there are a lot of children in the US that need adopting but unfortuantly most people want babies, not children or teens.

    Now that is sad.

  3. Sure, most do want babies, but no matter which you desire, you will find it quite a bit easier to get a new family member from another country.

And I’ll go ahead and say it — it’s about the cash, plain and simple. If government agencies gave away all the children they had in their “care,” then they’d lose funding. Their funding is based, at least in part, upon how many children they are “working” on finding homes for. So they literally have an incentive (cash) to NOT place them in homes. Welcome to government, USA.
