US Aiding Terrorists

For those who have been watching politics for years, this news is no shock. It’s getting coverage in the national media, but not a whole lot, despite this:

A federal agency that disburses billions of dollars in humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and pro-democracy programs every year, has inadvertently funneled American taxpayer funds to individuals and entities with “terrorist affiliations” and lacks the safeguards to prevent such incidents from recurring, an internal audit has revealed. (emphasis added)

Gee, do you think maybe Thomas Jefferson was wise beyond his years?

“I have ever deemed it fundamental for the United States never to take active part in the quarrels of Europe. Their political interests are entirely distinct from ours. Their mutual jealousies, their balance of power, their complicated alliances, their forms and principles of government, are all foreign to us. They are nations of eternal war. All their energies are expended in the destruction of the labor, property and lives of their people.” –Thomas Jefferson to James Monroe, 1823. ME: 15:436

“I sincerely join… in abjuring all political connection with every foreign power; and though I cordially wish well to the progress of liberty in all nations, and would forever give it the weight of our countenance, yet they are not to be touched without contamination from their other bad principles. Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto.” –Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Lomax, 1799. ME 10:124

There’s a time to say that we’ve messed with other countries enough and it’s time to stop. I think that time is now. So does Ron Paul.

  1. Where I appreciate the idea that we cannot be “Big Brother”, “Saviors of the Planet” or the “World Police”, I also shudder to think where we would be if we had not allied ourselves in WWII.
There will always be times when America will be given no choice but to fight, but yes… we have jumped in with both guns blazing, many times when other options should have been pursued. We will be alone in this world, fighting the rest of the world in order to survive, soon enough I think.

  2. I think WWII was quite a different situation than we face now in the middle east. Very different.

  3. I do know that I have mixed feelings about Iraq… like we should not have interferred or went there, but that is not a reason not to support our troops and give them credit what they have accomplished at great loss and in difficult circumstances. I definately don’t blame Bush for everything, but I do blame him and Congress for mismanagement of resources and in Bushes case some deciet on the issue.

  4. I often have mixed feelings on Iraq, too. I think we did good by getting rid of Saddam, but I think it’s past time for us to get out.
