Mayor McGovernor?

Today is the day that Charlotte Mayor-For-Life McCrory will announce his candidacy for governor. He’s not even “officially” in, but is winning some polls. But, as I’ve mentioned, the idea of a person from Charlotte winning a statewide office is unlikely.

As others have mentioned, the problem with McCrory entering “so late” (there’s already others who have been running for nearly a year) is that many people are already committed to a candidate. Others (Democrats) have claimed that the Charlotte area “curse” is because of the candidate, not Charlotte. Those people believe in the curse and want Republicans to select McCrory so he can lose.

Interesting enough, the Charlotte Mayor is running in an off year — in other words, McCrory is not taking a risk here — if he loses the election, he’s still mayor and can run for mayor again next year since they elect mayors in odd years, governors in even years. It will be quite interesting to see how much support McCrory gets. He will likely get the support of all the big industry and banks in Charlotte — which includes huge piles of money and internal company campaigning — and that might be enough.
