Barbara Howe in Government?
I expect that few people outside of North Carolina will recognize the name “Barbara Howe.” Indeed, many inside North Carolina will recognize it, even if all voters have seen it at one time or another. Barbara Howe ran for governor of North Carolina in 2000. She wasn’t Democrat or Republican, she is a Libertarian. Of course back in 2000, that’s when the Democrats permitted people other than Democrats and Republicans to run for election — it’s since been outlawed.
I’ve always liked Les Merritt. He’s one of very few Republicans to ever hold a statewide office. He’s currently the state auditor. And he just nominated Barbara Howe to sit on a task force to monitor unregulated, uncontrolled, unlimited government borrowing (aka “Tax Increment Financing”).
I cannot imagine that Barbara supports TIFs. I’m willing to bet she voted against allowing TIFs when they were on the ballot. So I think it may be quite interesting to see if she’s allowed to actually BE on the board (Merritt just nominated her) — and if she gets on the board, if there’s anything good said about TIFs. You can rest assured, the primary purpose of the TIF is to allow government to have unlimited cash with zero responsibility.

What’s wrong with a state that would outlaw third party representation??? That is in essence what they did.
Am I understanding it right… did you not say in a previous post that NC won’t allow a third party on the ballots and now third party candidates can’t ever run under the two main parties on the ballot???? Doesn’t sound like a Democracy to me.
Welcome to a state that has had one-party rule by Democrats for over a century. They have power and will not allow anyone else to take it from them under any conditions.
Hi Orge,
I just stumbled onto this comment while looking at some stuff related to Ron Paul’s visit to NC.
To update you on that appointment to the TIF taskforce: Les Merritt recommended me to the TIF Taskforce because he knew I had actively campaigned against the amendment allowing them when it was on the ballot in 2004.
Big surprise. Richard Moore chose not to put me on the committee.
I am going to the meetings anyway. They have only had one so far and not much happened. I’ll try to keep you posted.
And with regard to third parties in NC. It’s not outlawed. It’s just extremely difficult. But I am glad to say the Libertarian Party of North Carolina will submit 108,000 signatures that includes 72,000 verified signatures from registered voters (number required is 69,734), probably late next week (May 8).
Barbara Howe
No, not Richard Moore! I’m sure he wouldn’t do anything like that!
I’m extremely pleased to hear that the Libertarian Party will submit those signatures! That seems like an odd time because election filing dates for 2008 elections are already long gone. I’m not sure of the rules, but I sure hope that Libertarians get to stay on the ticket at least until the 2010 elections, even if they can’t run this year.
As for it being outlawed, we technically it’s not, but I was right in the mess of it last time when AFTER people had paid election filing fees, they got “De-certified” and removed from the ballot. That was awful. So it might not be outlawed, but it’s as close as it can to being so…
Do keep in touch (if you come back and read this). I actually met you and know you as I ran for election to the NC Senate back in 2000 when you were running for governor. I was on the Republican ticket, but I learned a lot about the Libertarian Party at that time (and found out that I’m actually much closer to a Libertarian than the current Republican Party).
And thank you very much for stopping by here!
