Ron Paul: Isolationist?

In the debate weeks ago, John McCain called Ron Paul an isolationist. At the time, Ron Paul explained, quite clearly, that he was not an isolationist at all. Paul explained what an isolationist is, and why he is not actually an isolationist. However, I still keep hearing people talk about Paul and who claim he’s isolationist. I still hear things like this:

Sure, Ron Paul the isolationist — if we just hide our heads in the sand, maybe the bad men won’t come and attack us. Yeah, that will work.

Problem is, it’s simply not true. An isolationist is one who works for isolationism:

the policy or doctrine of isolating one’s country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic commitments, international agreements, etc., seeking to devote the entire efforts of one’s country to its own advancement and remain at peace by avoiding foreign entanglements and responsibilities.

That is absolutely NOT anything close to what Ron Paul would do as president at all. Read Ron Paul’s words:

At the same time, we must not isolate ourselves. The generosity of the American people has been felt around the globe. Many have thanked God for it, in many languages. Let us have a strong America, conducting open trade, travel, communication, and diplomacy with other nations.

Ron Paul stands for freedom, first and foremost. As for Iraq, his position is that we’ve won, so let’s bring troops home. His position is that the US should not spread it’s military all over the entire planet to act as the world’s police force. We shouldn’t fight wars because an unelected body (the UN) tells us to. He believes in America first, not the world. An isolationist would not want open “trade, travel, communication, and diplomacy” with other nations. Ron Paul is no isolationist.

  1. Thank you Ogre, well written and well done. I think 90% of our foreign problems stem from the UN and the other 10% from a failure of our so called leaders to understand the importance of diplomacy in foreign relations. Bill Clinton was the worst at foreign affairs because of that weakness.

  2. I am pretty sure that Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate that will get us out of the UN without question.
